Why is saito old and cobb young

Prior to the hour flight, the chemist explains that the dreamsharers' collective brain functionality will multiply 20 times over. For a dream within a dream, "the effect is compounded. What the team doesn't realize, however, is that Cobb's past experiences in deep dream states, specifically in Limbo, will negatively affect their plan, evidenced by the continued presence of his deceased wife Mal Marion Cotillard , who appears as an angry projection. When Saito dies in the third level and sinks to Limbo, he's already begun to age in ways that not even Cobb can fully understand.

In Inception , one of the final twists is that Saito has accepted Limbo as reality. He's lived there for decades, just as Cobb knowingly spent decades in Limbo with his wife Mal.

The big difference, however, is that Cobb purposely orchestrated a dreamstate plan to be with Mal, who eventually believed that Limbo was indeed reality after locking away her totem. Even though Cobb appears to act quickly during Inception's finale , the potency of Yusuf's compound has pushed Saito deep within his infinite subconscious.

Cobb knows that he must find Saito in Limbo, but also knows that the businessman likely won't remember their arrangement. In fact, they even discuss this concept after Saito is shot in the first dream level. As it turns out, though, repetitive dialogue "You're going to become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone" and a spinning totem remind Cobb that the shores of his subconscious are not real. The old friends return to the real world, and Saito immediately honors his agreement by making the phone call that he promised all along, one that will allow Cobb to return to his family.

Both men are clearly dazed upon waking up in Inception because they've been trapped within their subconscious much longer than the rest of the team. The most common theory as to why Cobb is younger then Saito in limbo is because Cobb knew limbo wasn't reality so he projected himself not aging, whereas Saito lost his mind down there and thought he was aging and not in a dream.

Location: Floating around the Med. Limbo is not really a 'level', its more of a parallel as its 'unconstructed dream space' In the first level of the dream, the plan goes wrong, and it is revealed that Fischer has had his subconscious trained to fight Extractors.

In a violent car chase, Saito receives a mortal gunshot wound to the chest. The team brings him to a warehouse where they try to keep him alive as long as possible. In the next level of the dream, the Hotel , Saito simply watches. Due to the dream being another layer down, his gunshot wound hurts less and there is no blood, enabling him to function normally. After learning about Eames's forging ability, he accidentally confuses a projection of Peter Browning for a disguised Eames, uttering the line, " I see you've changed!

Eames then comes up behind Browning and he realizes his mistake. When the team goes to the final level of the dream, the snow-covered mountains , Saito accompanies them into the large hospital fortress in the center of the dream world; however, he is wounded, and his condition is worsening. When Fischer is shot by Mal , he is unable to help him and Fischer dies, descending into Limbo. Afterwards, Mal is killed by Cobb, and Eames asks Saito to hold a grenade and protect Fischer while he sets up explosives.

After using the grenade to kill many projections, Saito dies, and goes into Limbo. Cobb and Ariadne go down into Limbo to find Fischer, and after Ariadne pushes Fischer off of the highest floor of Cobb and Mal's home, she jumps herself, administering the kick, and leaving Cobb alone to search for Saito. Years later, Cobb washes up on a shore and is brought inside of a large palace; inside it is Saito, though he is now ninety years old.
