It's not that Charlie Sheen is bad in his new FX sitcom Anger Management, it's not even that the premise and writing are without merit It's like watching a raging bull trying to take drink tea from delicate china, no matter how hard Sheen, 46, tries, his Charlie Harper sharpness is dulled by his new character's apologist nature.

Scroll down for video Business as usual: This could be a scene from Two and a Half Men but we soon learn that this Charlie has a conscience, what could they be trying to tell us? I quit! It's a none-too-subtle clue to the nature of this show that Anger Management leading man is also called Charlie but has the last name Goodson, and is a therapist barely, but most definitely, IN control of his own demons. But it doesn't end there, Goodman's daughter is called Sam, the name of Sheen's eldest daughter with Denise Richards.

In marked contrast to his dry ribbing of his nephew Jake, however, Sheen's new protagonist is wonderfully considerate father to his daughter, who suffers from OCD. He's not mad anymore, ok: Sheen is charged with helping crazy people who make his character seem safe and calm The whole effort feels like an attempt to rehab the star, who suffered what he describes as a ' psychotic break ' last year. And it's affected the surrounding characters, who for the most part two-dimensional have mental problems.

But then how do you make a man who is alleged to have shot his ex-fiancee and held a knife to the mother of his children's neck appear safe? Surround him with lunatics, many of whom are unlikeable. Curmudgeon Ed is the strongest support act, played ably by Barry Corbin of Northern Exposure, he can't adapt to modern life and gets the best asides. Awkward predicament: Kerri Kenney makes an extended cameo as Charlie's unwanted love interest.

Short shrift: Brian Austin Green played a great cameo as the percentage obsessed boyfriend of Sheen's ex-wife. Friendly exes: Goodson gets on well with his former wife and Sheen's ex, Denise Richards, will appear in the show soon. Charlie also helps a group of inmates, and the prisoners are funnier in the main, especially as they recount horrific crimes while berating Charlie for trying to hit his wife's new boyfriend, club promoter Sean, played suitably horribly by Brian Austin Green.

Sheen's ex-wife is played by a resigned Shawnee Smith and a his teenager daughter, by the beautiful Daniela Bobadilla. We first meet her after a bout of energetic sex to hear Charlie declare that she is the best kind of friend as she wants no kind of commitment.

Making him look better: Charlie's Charlie interacts mostly with crazy people and prisoners, which of course makes him look good. Family ties: Goodson has an ex-wife and daughter, who he treats very well in stark contrast to Harper's relationship with Alan and Jake.

Losing it: Sheen's character was a baseball player who destroyed his career because he couldn't control his anger. There's an amusing exchange where they contemplate using a Milky Way wrapper for protection, and Selma actually manages to make it sound classy. The second episode features a guest performance from Kerri Kenney of Reno ! If Sheen can become confident enough to remove his hair shirt and bring some crazy, as well as allowing Selma Blair twice the air time, it could be a winner.

The group: Charlie meets with his patients at home, ED in the middle is the most developed character so far. Tame: The craziest thing that Goodson does in the show is almost hit Sean with a lamp, but his daughter arriving stopped him. Sheen has said in a YouTube promotion that Goodson is 'really smart, really funny. I think it's going to be refreshing for people to see this character, unlike a guy Harper who has two moves - drunk and drunker.
