However, if you work or play in a dirty environment it is advisable to cover your tattoo with a little Clingfilm or bandage for the first two days - but ensure you remove the cover when you are home and always clean the tattoo before and after covering.
Remember that it is a fresh wound and needs to breathe to heal. Ideally wear clothes that you don't care about as you're tattoo may ooze plasma and ink during the healing process. If your clothes or linen gets stuck to the tattoo, wet them a little with warm water and they will come off.
Be careful of the new tattoo oozing through nice cloths at work! You can cover the tattoo temporarily with a clingfilm - but for short periods of time only as you need to let the tattoo breathe - I cannot repeat this enough! Healing: It can take up to weeks for your tattoo to fully heal. It is common for a small amount of bruising to appear around some tattoo's - especially on the inside or arms and legs, or where the skin may be sensitive. Instead, lightly 'slap' your tattoo if the itch needs to be scratched or rub some more lotion onto the skin!
If you tattoo starts to peel, this is also a sign of healing and you can re-apply more lotion to keep it moist. You can take ibruprofen to help with any discomfort during healing. This is really important. Do not pick or scratch the skin as this will remove the scabs and consequently remove the ink from the tattoo!
Daily Care of your tattoo: Wash your tattoo at least twice a day for the first week, reapplying the lotion times a day or especially when you feel the tattoo is dry. Keeping your tattoo moist will prevent it from scabbing and peeling and thereby reducing any fading of the colour.
What to avoid: Yes, you can shower! It is very important to keep your skin clean during the healing process. However, it is advisable to avoid swimming baths, lakes and soaking in the bath for the first 7 days of healing. It is believed that chemicals like chlorine and the bacteria found in these places can cause the tattoo to become infected or fade. Soaking in the bath will cause any scabs to come off quicker and along with it some of the ink.
Savlon is a good option because it has a mild odor and not many harsh chemical additives. Savlon can be used to heal cuts and bruises, chapped skin, sunburn and bug bites.
Its soothing, smooth texture and rapid healing properties have made it one of the most popular antiseptic creams. Savlon contains two active ingredients — cetrimide and chlorhexidine digluconate. Both of these are disinfectants and antiseptics. Many people in the tattoo community swear by using Savlon, while others warn of its side effects. One of the drawbacks is that it may cause some color bleeding because it contains a mild bleaching agent — chlorhexidine gluconate.
If this is a big concern for you, it might be better to use a product specifically tailored for tattoo aftercare. Same as Vaseline. Use bepathen instead. Rub on a generous layer, and don't rub it all in. And it's important to not scratch it.
Also in response to a pp regarding tattoos bleeding after a week, that isn't normal. Please see a different reputable tattooist about it. I'm a tattoo artist, aswell as having 20 odd tattoos myself, and I've never heard of anyone bleeding after a week of having a new tattoo. Please get it seen to ASAP.
Can't find your answer? The pain im experiencing is like bad sunburn, the area around tattoo is red and very tender to touch. It is on the inside of my left arm and takes up most of bottom part of arm. I was expecting it to be sore, but seems quite tender. Ive had to put a tubigrip bandage on it as its too sore to have a jumper touching it, I also got some cream of tattooist to apply but it really stung.
Ive got Germolene, is that a good idea? But mite try Bepthan 1st as that's what tattooist recommended as well. As I said Its been about 8 years since last tattoo I have 2 already so I have conviently forgotten about the pain!!
Any other advice? In answer to Lor04jxr. Firstly, take off the bandage. It's important to let some air get to the skin, so try wearing a loose top, or rolling the sleeve of a top up. My advice would be to gently wash your arm with warm water, then gently pat it dry. This is what I advise everyone to do when they get home after having a new tattoo Then apply some bepanthen, a generous layer, and not rubbing it in completely.
You can also wrap some cling film around the arm after applying the cream, just makesure you take it off after a little while and air the skin.
Don't use any perfumed products on the skin during the healing process, and all should be okay. Hi, Ive nicked some of my daughter's bepathen cream and so far I can say, it doesn't sting as much as the tattoo cream the tattooist gave me! It does seem very tender to touch esp if fabric touches it! But I think ill leave the bandage for sleeping, in case I roll on it.
